Somatic Experiencing (SE) therapy is a body-based approach which has the aim of modifying the stress response system, and where challenges arise this is often referred to as nervous system dysregulation. This approach aims to restore balance within the nervous system by helping you to naturally discharge this stored energy which is innate to all humans.
This way of working is for people who want to try something different to traditional talk therapy, and/or may experience anxiety, disconnection, trauma based disorders and syndromes such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, somatic experiencing helps you tune into your bodily sensations, and helps you notice what these sensations mean and recognise the cycles they go through, and how they can get stuck in a loop. This is done in a gentle way that allows you to work at a pace that feels best for you.
Somatic experiencing therapy then helps you release trapped survival energy that contributes to the dysregulation of the stress response system. You will be encouraged to feel into your bodily sensations and help support the natural ways that the human body discharges this energy which may include movement.
